Happy World Elephant Day!

This day, August 12th, we honor one of our planet's most breathtaking creatures on earth with World Elephant Day. Today gives us an opportunity to rally together and give a voice to the concerns threatening elephants.

Over the last decade, the number of elephants has significantly fallen and they could be mostly extinct by the end of the next decade. Asian elephant numbers have plummeted by at least 50% over the last three generations, and they're still in decline today. With only 40,000-50,000 left in the wild, the species is classified as endangered. And in Africa the number of forest elephants in the wild have fallen by more than 86 percent over three decades, and are now considered “critically endangered” by the IUCN. The population of the African savanna elephants have also decreased by at least 60 percent over the past 50 years and are on the Red List now listing that species as “endangered”. World Elephant Day was created in 2012 to shine a light on these issues and allows us to become a collective force worldwide.

We are all in this together and we can all do our part in many ways. At Elephants Austin we do our part by hosting fundraising events that support ethical sanctuaries such as Elephant Nature Park in Thailand and grassroots organizations such as The Jumbo Troops in India. We are also working on an education program for schools based in Austin, Texas. These are just a few ways we support the elephants of the world. And ultimately it takes a village. So on that note, we bid you adieu and we hope you enjoy our most recent elephant cake courtesy of Care for Elephants in Thailand. Enjoy!
